Xincun Community Conservation in Yinggehai
Xincun Village in Yinggehai Town, Ledong Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province, encompasses diverse coastal ecosystems, including coastal habitats, Casuarina forests, and intertidal wetlands. It is an important wintering ground for migratory birds in Hainan and was historically an important sea turtle nesting site. In response to the need to protect coastal habitats while supporting sustainable community development, Shan Shui continues to support community-based biodiversity conservation initiatives.
Through its support for the Yinggehai Xincun Nature and Culture Conservation Center, Shan Shui has helped collect ecological data through camera-trap surveys and wetland bird monitoring. Community outreach and environmental education activities also help more people understand local wildlife and its habitats and encourage community participation in conservation.
Monitoring has documented the presence of rare and notable wildlife, including the Hainan hare, leopard cat, and butterfly lizard. The project has also organized community presentations, school outreach activities, and educational murals featuring local species to engage residents and young people. In addition, local fishers have received training in sea turtle conservation and rescue, while villagers have participated in beach clean-ups and mangrove planting to support habitat restoration.
In 2024, the Xincun conservation site in Yinggehai was selected as one of China’s potential OECM cases.
Alongside supporting community-based conservation, Shan Shui works to connect community initiatives with broader public engagement. In 2026, Shan Shui organized the public-interest photography exhibition Blue Coexistence: Marine Conservation and Sustainable Development in Hainan in Shanghai. The exhibition showcased conservation efforts in Hainan’s coastal communities and the challenges facing marine ecosystems, encouraging greater public awareness of marine conservation and the relationship between coastal communities and the ocean.
