Shanghai Urban Wildlife Outreach Event Inspires Young Nature Stewards
On April 16, the Shanghai Urban Wildlife Outreach Event concluded successfully, bringing together over 100 children for an engaging learning experience on urban biodiversity.
Built around the “Shanghai Urban Nature Observation” science course package, the event focused on the theme “Our Wild Animal Neighbors.” Zhou Yun, leader of the Raccoon Dog Population Survey and an experienced nature education lecturer, was invited as the keynote speaker. A dedicated volunteer who has participated in Shanghai’s raccoon dog citizen science project for three consecutive years, Ms. Zhou delivered an interactive and accessible introduction to urban wildlife.

Using picture books such as The Growth of a Little Raccoon Dog and My Raccoon Dog Neighbor, Ms. Zhou guided children to explore the habits, distribution, and habitats of raccoon dogs within Shanghai’s residential communities. She also introduced other commonly seen urban species, including the Amur hedgehog, pallas’ squirrel, Siberian weasel, and Asian badger. Through these stories and examples, children were encouraged to observe nature actively, understand it through a scientific lens, and avoid common misconceptions—such as equating fear with respect or feeding with care.

To reinforce learning, participants received a range of educational materials, including the picture book Whose Home Is the Forest?, the Community Handbook on Common Urban Wildlife in Shanghai, and raccoon dog–themed stickers. These resources were jointly developed by Shanghai Forestry, Shan Shui Conservation Center, and Fudan University, and are designed to support continued learning beyond the classroom.

While the event lasted only a few hours, its impact is intended to be long-lasting. By nurturing curiosity, empathy, and respect for nature, the program aims to empower children to become responsible stewards of urban ecosystems. Encouraging harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife is not only a key lesson for young learners, but also an essential step toward building more sustainable and resilient cities.
